The Baqais( Dr.Fareed Uddin Baqai and Dr.Zahida Baqai) both medical practitioners and surgeons by profession, after completing their medical education in Pakistan and Great Britain, started practicing the art of healing in an underdeveloped country and in a fast growing city of Karachi. The enormity and complexity of health care problems and the paucity of proper infrastructures for health care delivery systems motivated them to develop a comprehensive concept of community development on the basis of self reliance and without depending upon the public sector financing. The concept started unfolding itself in concrete actions when the Baqai Foundation acquired a large piece of land on Super Highway just at the outskirts of Karachi and established the first ever rural Medical Centre supported by secondary and tertiary health care facilities in 1976.
The gashing flow of creativity and new ideas then began to take further concrete shape in the form of an organization. From this stage onwards, it was only a matter of time and intensity of commitments. In early 80's the basic construction of the building of Baqai Medical College was started. After the completion of the infrastructure, designing of curriculum to conform to the community-oriented medical education and recruitment of highly qualified and most experienced personnel available in the profession, affiliation with the University of Karachi was obtained and the Baqai Medical College was started in 1988 with admission of 50 students for the first batch. In 1992, Baqai Foundation established the Baqai Dental College. It goes to the credit of Baqai’s that this is the first ever Dental College to be set-up at Karachi. In July 1996 through a bill passed unanimously in Sindh Assembly and the then Governor of Sindh, through a special notification promulgated an ordinance, called Baqai Medical University Act of 1996. By virtue of it Baqai Medical University came into existence.
Presently the university stands on a campus of 72 acres with buildup area of 7,27,374 sq.ft in seven blocks of buildings. Housing 13 institutions, shouldering the teaching responsibility of 1800 students, awarding 19 degrees and diplomas in various specialties.
